Considerations of Place- M.A London College of Fashion

Darkness is a very interesting condition. Light is something if you like, that we wake into. My instinct it’s that it is not an internal condition. Light is cultured and educated, while darkness is uncultured and uneducated and deeply within our unspoken story. From Dante to Freud to the Devil, we live, if you like, an internal darkness. The fact that we know it, each one of us, is both frightening and intimate.- Anish Kapoor

The void of abstract space stands for a certain consciousness of one's own position in space. it affects you to become self-aware, generating a sense of place inevitably leads to self-awareness. Voids disrupt all possibilities of calculation, measurement and reality, playing on our minds and bodies. This collection is an effort to reinforce the message of spirit within the primal simplicity of shape, to generate a sense of place between object and body- to contain, control and encase an exteriority that seems interior.

Revealing and recovering an inwardness-

I worked closely with dutch designer Fleur Goedendorp to produce a series of hats. The connection I made with Fleur led me to investigate more about dutch artworks from the golden age. Parallels with Kapoors work became apparent: Female, interior, emergence, exterior, time perspective and space echoes in both avenues of my research. The hats were an extension of how to explore these things in another form.
